Got questions? We’ve got answers!

WHAT’S THE BEST PAINT FOR CORK?

We recommend using a latex-acrylic composite paint. Here’s why:

  1. It offers solid coverage while allowing the cork to “breathe,” meaning its natural texture isn’t sealed off completely.
  2. It’s resistant to dirt and stains, making upkeep simple.
  3. It doesn’t compromise cork’s insulating or sound-dampening qualities—provided it’s applied in a thin coat.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN CORK BEFORE PAINTING?

  1. Start by removing dust and debris. A vacuum with a soft-brush attachment works well, as does a soft hand brush or a dry/slightly damp (never wet!) microfiber cloth.
  2. Avoid scrubbing aggressively or using harsh cleaners—cork doesn’t respond well to them. Skip cleaning fluids, alcohol, bleach, or similar products.

HOW DO YOU PAINT CORK PROPERLY?

  1. Prime the surface: Applying a primer first reduces cork’s absorbency, helps the paint go on smoothly, and lowers paint usage. Let it dry completely per the manufacturer’s guidelines.
  2. Work in thin coats: Two light coats will look better and last longer than one thick one.
  3. Use the right tools: Short- to medium-nap rollers work best for cork’s texture. For convenience, try our all-in-one cork painting kit.
  4. Let it dry between coats: Wait at least 4 hours between coats to prevent streaks and peeling.

In short: Prime → First coat → Dry → Second coat → Done! Still unsure? Drop us an email—we’re happy to help!

HOW LONG DOES PAINT TAKE TO DRY ON CORK?

Under typical indoor conditions (about 68–72°F with good ventilation):

  1. Between coats: Wait at least 4 hours.
  2. Fully cured: Roughly 4 hours after the final coat.

Pro tips:

  1. Don’t rush drying with a hairdryer or heater—this can shorten the paint’s lifespan.
  2. In cooler or more humid conditions, allow extra time before recoating.
  3. Keep the area well-ventilated after painting to speed up the process.

BRUSH OR ROLLER – WHICH SHOULD YOU USE?

A roller is your best bet. Here’s why:

  • It delivers even coverage without clogging the cork’s pores, preserving its natural look and performance.
  • It’s faster and more efficient, especially for larger areas.

HOW MANY COATS SHOULD YOU APPLY?

Usually, two thin coats will do. One coat often looks patchy, while too many layers can block cork’s pores and cause peeling later.

HOW MUCH AREA DOES ONE CAN OF ACRYLIC PAINT COVER?

With two coats, a standard 0.9-liter (roughly 30 fl oz) can will cover about 54 square feet of cork.

WHAT TYPES OF CORK SURFACES CAN BE PAINTED?

Paint works well on cork in rolls or tiles. The texture matters more than the form. Fine-grain cork is easiest to paint and produces the smoothest finish.

Coarse-grain cork can also be painted but tends to absorb more paint and will maintain a rougher finish—even after two coats. Many people prefer this for its rustic, natural look.

HOW DO YOU STORE LEFTOVER CORK PAINT?

Got paint left over? Store it properly so it’s ready for your next project:

  1. Seal it tight: Make sure the lid is firmly closed to keep air out.
  2. Keep it in a cool, dry place: Room temperature is ideal—avoid heat, dampness, and direct sunlight.
  3. Protect from freezing and overheating: Extreme temps can ruin paint—don’t leave it outside in winter or a hot garage in summer.

Cork is an incredible natural material – warm to the touch, breathable, and a fantastic insulator. But it plays by its own rules. Its porous, flexible surface means you can’t just treat it like a regular wall. That’s why we went with a paint designed specifically for cork – made to work with the material, not against it. The formula and texture are spot-on for the job. After extensive real-world testing, we know it delivers exactly what it promises.

#1 A PAINT MADE FOR CORK

Cork paint is a smart, adaptable solution – just as practical for weekend DIY projects as it is for bigger remodeling jobs. If you’re tackling cork surfaces at home, you can get the job done yourself without any headaches.

And in the building and interior design world, cork is having a moment. People love the look and feel, but often want to change up the color or blend it with the rest of the space. This paint makes that possible – easily, and without sacrificing any of cork’s natural advantages. It still breathes, absorbs sound, and keeps its authentic, organic look.

#2 REGULAR WALL PAINT WON’T CUT IT

Cork is soft and flexible, filled with tiny pores. It performs best with paint that’s elastic, lightweight, and breathable. High-quality acrylic-latex formulas check all those boxes – they create a durable yet permeable coating that doesn’t clog the surface, interfere with cork’s natural performance, or peel away over time. The result? A beautiful, natural finish, solid adhesion, and the full benefits of the material intact.

By contrast, many off-the-shelf wall paints – especially big-box store brands – don’t make the grade. They leave behind a thick, rigid shell that fights against cork’s flexibility. That traps moisture, kills breathability, and can lead to cracks. Bottom line: not every paint is cork-friendly, and knowing that before you start will save you time and frustration.

#3 SUSTAINABLE, ON YOUR TERMS

In a market where almost everything comes with a green leaf and an “eco” tag, it’s easy to get lost in the noise. Greenwashing is everywhere – attractive labels masking products that are mostly plastic and chemicals. Cork is the real deal: a renewable, biodegradable resource harvested without damaging the tree. It’s also long-lasting, lightweight, and naturally pleasant to the touch.

Producing it requires less energy and generates no hard-to-recycle waste – a genuine benefit, not just a marketing line. Best of all, it gives you freedom – you can repaint it, refresh it, and customize it to fit your style whenever you want.
