Looking for a way to make cork more fire-resistant? In some cases, building codes require it; in others, it’s simply a smart safety measure built into the project. But how do you achieve reliable results? Typical off-the-shelf products aren’t designed for natural materials like cork. That’s where HolzProf comes in — a ready-to-use fire retardant for cork that stops flames from spreading and slows down ignition. A straightforward step that makes a major difference in overall protection.

Want the details? Here’s everything you need to know:
WHAT BENEFITS DOES HOLZPROF PROVIDE AS A FIRE RETARDANT FOR NATURAL CORK?
The formula penetrates the cork, slowing down the burning process while also limiting flame spread. This means fire develops more gradually, giving you valuable extra time to act in an emergency.
WHICH SURFACES CAN BE TREATED WITH HOLZPROF?
HolzProf works on wood and other cellulose-based materials — including cork. Since it’s water-based, it doesn’t alter the natural look or texture of the material.
Important: the surface must absorb the product to be effective. Cork that’s been painted, sealed, or coated won’t allow proper absorption.
WHAT SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD BE FOLLOWED DURING USE?
Wear protective gloves and safety goggles, and make sure the area is well-ventilated. If spraying, use a mask with a P3 filter. These simple steps ensure safe and comfortable handling. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
HOW SHOULD THE CORK BE PREPARED BEFORE APPLYING HOLZPROF?
The cork surface should be dry, dust-free, clean, and free from grease, stains, or adhesive residue.
Note: untreated cork is essential. Paint, varnish, or any finish that blocks absorption will prevent the product from working properly.
HOW IS HOLZPROF APPLIED TO NATURAL CORK?
- Apply using a brush, roller, by dipping, or — with professional equipment — via vacuum-pressure treatment. Make sure all sides of the cork are treated.
- The cork’s moisture level should ideally be around 16%, with a maximum of 18%. Do not apply to frozen or icy surfaces.
- Apply in three coats, with 40–60 minute intervals between layers. Total usage should be at least 300 g/m² (270 ml/m²). For denser woods like Canadian WRC cedar, at least 360 ml/m² is recommended. To be effective, the solution must soak 1.5–3 mm into the cork. Apply only at +50–86°F (minimum +41°F) with humidity below 75%.
- Full fire resistance is achieved after 7 days (under ideal conditions — approx. 68°F and humidity under 75%). While drying, keep cork protected from rain and direct sunlight.
WHAT IS THE PROPER WAY TO STORE HOLZPROF?
Store in its original, tightly sealed container, in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. Storage temperature should remain between +41°F and +77°F. Avoid freezing.
Shelf life: 24 months from the production date.
Want to protect cork but don’t feel like dealing with products that seem overly technical? Many require mixing, special tools, and lengthy prep work – which makes it tempting to keep putting it off. HolzProf is a fire-retardant solution that’s ready to use right out of the container – simple to apply, fast in action, and no prior know-how needed.

#1 DEPENDABLE FIRE SAFETY
Cork naturally chars slowly instead of instantly igniting. Still, for many real-world uses, that alone doesn’t cut it – which is why added protection is a smart move.
HolzProf meets EN 13501-1 standards with a B-s1,d0 rating. This means it barely feeds flames, produces minimal smoke, and won’t drip or release burning particles.
#2 FAST & EASY TO USE
No diluting, no special prep – it comes ready-made. That makes application smooth and straightforward. Because it’s liquid, it penetrates the cork thoroughly, protecting not only the outside but also the inner layers. That’s key, since true fire safety goes beyond the surface you can see.
Best part? You can handle it on your own. The process feels much like painting – simple, intuitive, and requiring no professional skills. The difference is, instead of giving cork a new look, you’re giving it lasting safety.
#3 BENEFITS OF A WATER-BASED FORMULA
A water-based fire retardant is a practical option. First, there’s no overpowering chemical smell. Second, it’s safer to work with. Without harsh vapors, there’s less risk of discomfort or breathing issues.
Cleanup is quick and easy too. Whether you use a brush, roller, or sprayer, everything rinses out with tap water – no solvents or complicated cleaning needed.
