WHAT EXACTLY IS A “FLOATING” CORK FLOOR?

A floating cork floor is a type of flooring that doesn’t require glue. Thanks to the Corkloc click system, the planks simply lock together – making installation quick, clean, and hassle-free.

FLOATING VS. GLUED CORK FLOOR – WHICH SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Floating floors are perfect if you value easy installation and want the flexibility to reconfigure your space or remove the floor later.

 

Glued cork floors, on the other hand, are a better fit for high-traffic areas or places that demand extra durability, since they handle heavy use more effectively.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL CORK PANELS?

Setting up a cork floor is straightforward. Here’s how:

 
  1. Prep the subfloor: Make sure it’s level, clean, and dry. Remove any debris or uneven spots.
  2. PE sheet: Lay down a polyethylene sheet at least 0.2 mm thick for extra insulation and moisture protection. Overlap seams by 8 inches and extend 2 inches up the wall.
  3. Starting point: Begin in a corner, ideally near the main source of natural light, so the cork’s texture looks its best.
  4. Expansion gap: Leave about 3/8 inch (10 mm) between the planks and walls or fixed elements. This allows for natural expansion and contraction.
  5. Connecting panels: Place the first plank with the tongue facing the wall. Insert the next plank at an angle, click it in, and lower it flat. Continue until the row is complete.
  6. Next row: Use the leftover piece from the previous row to start the new one, staggering the joints by at least 12 inches (30 cm) for added stability.
  7. Final row: Trim the planks lengthwise if needed, but always maintain the expansion gap.

     

DOES CORK FLOORING NEED TO ACCLIMATE BEFORE INSTALLATION?

Yes. Let the cork planks acclimate for 72 hours in the room where they’ll be installed. This helps prevent warping later on.

WHAT KIND OF SUBFLOORS CAN A FLOATING CORK FLOOR BE INSTALLED ON?

Floating cork floors can be installed on most hard, flat surfaces like concrete, wood, vinyl, or tile. Always use a PE sheet underneath. This lets you update your interior quickly without removing the old floor, adding warmth and a unique look to your home.

CAN A FLOATING CORK FLOOR BE LAID OVER FOAM INSULATION?

Because of possible instability and uneven weight distribution, we don’t recommend installing cork floors directly over foam insulation.

IS CORK FLOORING SUITABLE FOR BATHROOMS?

Due to the way the planks are constructed, we don’t suggest using cork flooring in bathrooms or other wet areas.

WHAT ABOUT BALCONIES OR OUTDOOR USE?

Because of changing weather and temperature shifts, cork is not recommended outdoors, including balconies. Cork flooring is designed primarily for indoor use.

IS FLOATING CORK FLOORING COMPATIBLE WITH RADIANT HEATING?

Yes, floating cork floors work well with hydronic radiant heating systems. Their natural insulating properties help distribute warmth evenly and improve energy efficiency.

 

Note: These floors are not suitable for electric radiant heating, since rapid temperature swings can damage the material.

HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN A CORK FLOOR?

Cork flooring is low-maintenance. Sweep or vacuum regularly and mop occasionally with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals. For extra protection, consider special care products designed for cork floors.

IS CORK FLOORING PET-FRIENDLY?
