WHAT IS EXPANDED CORK INSULATION AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Expanded cork is a 100% natural insulation material manufactured in the form of rigid boards. The process used to make it is surprisingly similar to popping popcorn. Cork granules are heated to extremely high temperatures (above 350°C), causing them to expand significantly in volume – much like kernels turning into popcorn. This process creates the unique cellular structure of expanded cork, with millions of microscopic pockets filled with air. Those trapped air cells are a key reason the material performs so well as insulation. In simple terms, expanded cork works like a natural thermos: it slows the movement of heat while also helping control sound.

Heating the cork also releases suberin, a naturally occurring resin found within the material itself. Suberin acts as a natural binder, allowing the expanded granules to bond together and form a solid block. Because the cork essentially binds itself, synthetic glues and chemical additives are not required during this stage of production. The finished insulation therefore remains 100% natural.

The result is a lightweight yet durable cork insulation board with low thermal conductivity (λ approximately 0.036–0.040 W/mK). Its cellular structure can also absorb and disperse sound waves. Depending on the overall construction assembly used for a particular project, expanded cork can help reduce noise by several dozen decibels.

WHEN DOES IT MAKE SENSE TO USE EXPANDED CORK BOARDS?

Expanded cork can be a practical solution for a variety of everyday comfort and insulation issues. It may be worth considering when walls feel noticeably cold, indoor spaces heat up too quickly during the summer, or echo and unwanted noise make a room less comfortable.

 

Expanded cork may be especially useful when:

  • your home loses heat quickly and maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature is difficult,
  • rooms cool down soon after you lower the heat, requiring the heating system to run more frequently,
  • your home gets excessively hot during the summer and you depend heavily on air conditioning,
  • you can noticeably feel cold coming through walls, floors, ceilings, or the roof,
  • everyday sounds and unwanted noise are becoming disruptive,
  • you want to improve the acoustics of a room by reducing echo and reflected sound,
  • you are building an energy-efficient home,
  • you are insulating a building and want a natural alternative to mineral wool or polystyrene insulation,
  • you need insulation for a flat roof, pitched roof, or “green roof” system.

 

There are also situations where expanded cork may not be the best fit:

  • when your only priority is purchasing the least expensive insulation material available,
  • when the project allows for only an extremely thin insulation layer, such as 2–3 mm.

HOW IS EXPANDED CORK DIFFERENT FROM STANDARD CORK?

Many familiar cork products – including laminate flooring underlayment, cork panels, and wall coverings – are made from agglomerated cork. This material consists of cork granules bonded together with an adhesive or other binding agent. It is what we mean here by “standard” cork. Agglomerated cork is generally lighter in color, has a smoother and more uniform finish, and works well for wall and flooring applications. However, it is not primarily designed for more demanding insulation projects.

Expanded cork has a noticeably different appearance and structure. It is dark, often nearly black, with a more porous texture and stronger insulating characteristics than conventional cork products. For that reason, it is commonly selected when greater thermal or acoustic performance is required.

If you mainly need an attractive decorative finish or a relatively thin cork layer, traditional agglomerated cork is usually the better choice. If your goal is effective thermal and acoustic insulation made entirely from a natural material, expanded cork is the option we recommend.

HOW LONG DO EXPANDED CORK INSULATION BOARDS LAST?

Expanded cork is highly durable. It is a stable material designed to maintain its properties over a long service life. Cork naturally contains suberin, which helps protect its structure against moisture penetration and microorganisms. As a result, the material shows natural resistance to moisture, mold, insects, and rodents. When properly installed as part of a correctly designed building assembly, expanded cork does not provide them with a food source.

The boards also maintain their dimensional stability across an exceptionally broad temperature range – approximately –180°C to +120°C. Expanded cork meets the requirements of EN 13170 and EN 13172 and carries a French A+ emissions rating, indicating very low levels of volatile substance emissions in indoor environments.

POLYSTYRENE VS. EXPANDED CORK – WHICH INSULATION SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?

Polystyrene is the less expensive option, and cost is its primary advantage over cork. It remains a widely used insulation material, but its contribution to acoustic comfort is quite limited. In practical applications, the improvement in noise reduction may be barely noticeable.

Expanded cork costs more, but it offers benefits beyond thermal insulation alone. In addition to helping reduce heat transfer, its cellular structure can make a noticeable difference in room acoustics. Another important distinction is its origin: unlike polystyrene, expanded cork is produced entirely from a natural raw material.

 

Here are some of the key differences between the two materials:

  • Moisture and mold – cork does not provide a food source for mold or fungi and can support a vapor-permeable wall assembly, helping reduce the risk of trapped moisture. With polystyrene, moisture may become trapped within certain wall assemblies, potentially reducing insulation performance.
  • Acoustics – polystyrene generally provides little improvement in noise control. Cork, on the other hand, has a cellular structure that can help absorb and scatter sound waves.
  • Fire behavior – cork remains comparatively stable when exposed to fire and does not release the toxic gases commonly associated with petrochemical materials. Rather than melting like polystyrene, cork chars when exposed directly to flames.
  • Environmental impact – polystyrene is petroleum-based and commonly becomes waste at the end of its useful life. Cork is harvested from the bark of the cork oak without cutting down the tree. It is also recyclable, so it does not create the same type of problematic waste associated with many synthetic insulation materials.

HOW SHOULD YOU PREPARE A WALL BEFORE INSTALLATION?

  1. Begin by thoroughly cleaning the surface. Remove dust, dirt, loose paint, old adhesive, and wallpaper residue. Newly finished walls may also have a layer of construction dust that is easy to overlook. Make sure it is removed, as it can interfere with proper adhesive bonding.
  2. Check the condition of the wall before installing the boards. Cracks, holes, and significant surface irregularities should be repaired and leveled beforehand.

DO EXPANDED CORK BOARDS NEED TO ACCLIMATE BEFORE INSTALLATION?

Yes. Before installation, leave the cork in the room where it will be installed for approximately 72 hours. This gives the material time to adjust to the temperature and humidity conditions of the space. Since cork is a natural material, installing the boards immediately after delivery may lead to minor dimensional changes later, including slight expansion or shrinkage. Allowing the material to acclimate helps minimize that possibility.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL EXPANDED CORK INSULATION BOARDS?

For installation, we recommend Wakol D-3540 contact adhesive for cork. It is the adhesive we use for our own cork installations, and we have found it to provide reliable, long-lasting results.

 

Plan on using approximately 100 g of adhesive per board. As a general guideline:

  • a 0.8 kg container is enough for approximately 8 boards,
  • a 2.5 kg container is enough for approximately 25 boards.

 

When applied to a dry, clean, and even wall surface, the adhesive provides a strong and durable bond.

CAN EXPANDED CORK INSULATION BE INSTALLED OUTDOORS?

Standard expanded cork boards are intended primarily for interior applications. If your project involves installing cork on an exterior facade, Facade Expanded Cork is the more appropriate product for that application.

CAN YOU PAINT EXPANDED CORK?

Yes. For the best results, we generally recommend using paint specifically designed or suitable for cork surfaces.

Keep in mind that expanded cork naturally has a porous, textured, and somewhat uneven surface. Because of this structure, achieving a perfectly smooth and completely uniform painted finish may require more effort than with a conventional flat surface.
