WHAT IS EXPANDED CORK INSULATION AND HOW IS IT MADE?

Expanded cork is a 100% natural insulation material manufactured in the form of rigid boards. What makes it especially interesting is the way it is produced. Cork granules are exposed to temperatures above 350°C, causing them to increase significantly in volume – somewhat like kernels popping into popcorn. This process creates an exceptionally porous internal structure filled with millions of tiny pockets of trapped air. Those air pockets are a major part of what gives expanded cork its insulating properties, helping slow heat transfer while also limiting the amount of sound that passes through the material.

Another distinctive feature is that synthetic glue is not required to hold the cork granules together. Intense heat releases suberin, a naturally occurring resin found within cork itself. Suberin serves as the binding agent, allowing the expanded granules to bond together and form a solid block. Because the cork effectively uses one of its own natural components as a binder, the manufacturing process does not require artificial adhesives or chemical additives.

WHEN DOES EXPANDED CORK BOARD MAKE SENSE FOR A BUILDING?

Expanded cork can be a practical choice when you are trying to address common comfort issues inside a home or building. These may include walls that feel cold, rooms that become uncomfortably hot during warm weather, or spaces affected by excessive noise, reverberation, or echo.

 

You may want to consider expanded cork if:

  • your home loses heat quickly and maintaining a steady indoor temperature is difficult,
  • rooms cool down noticeably during winter soon after you turn down the heat,
  • your interior spaces heat up quickly in summer and you rely heavily on air conditioning,
  • your walls feel as though they are allowing cold temperatures into the room,
  • outdoor sounds or noise from other areas of the home interfere with everyday comfort,

WHAT SETS EXPANDED CORK APART FROM REGULAR CORK?

Many everyday cork products – including laminate flooring underlayment, decorative wall coverings, and conventional cork boards – are made from agglomerated cork. With this type of material, cork granules are combined using an adhesive or another binding agent. This is what we generally mean by standard or “regular” cork. It typically has a lighter appearance and a smoother feel, making it well suited for decorative flooring and wall applications. However, it is not primarily engineered for more demanding thermal insulation projects.

Expanded cork has a noticeably different appearance and structure. Its surface is dark, nearly black, with an open and clearly visible porous texture. It also delivers stronger insulating performance than conventional agglomerated cork. For this reason, expanded cork is commonly selected when improving thermal or acoustic insulation is the primary goal.

HOW DURABLE IS EXPANDED CORK BOARD INSULATION?

Expanded cork is designed to remain durable and stable over extended periods of use. One of the naturally occurring substances within cork is suberin. In addition to acting as a natural binder during production, it helps restrict moisture penetration and contributes to the material’s resistance to microorganisms.

Expanded cork also offers excellent dimensional stability. It can maintain its form across an exceptionally wide temperature range, from approximately –180°C to +120°C. The material meets the requirements of EN 13170 and EN 13172. It has also earned the French A+ indoor emissions classification, indicating very low levels of volatile substances released into indoor air.

EXPANDED CORK VS. POLYSTYRENE: WHICH OPTION BETTER FITS YOUR NEEDS?

One of the strongest arguments in favor of polystyrene is its lower upfront cost. Its affordability is a major reason it is so widely used for insulation projects. When improved room acoustics are also a priority, however, the benefits it provides may be limited.

Expanded cork generally comes with a higher initial cost, but its benefits extend beyond slowing the movement of heat. Its cellular, porous structure can also contribute to a noticeable improvement in acoustic comfort. There is also a fundamental difference in what the two materials are made from: cork is entirely natural in origin, whereas polystyrene is a synthetic material.

The better choice ultimately comes down to what matters most for your project. If minimizing the initial purchase price is your main concern, polystyrene may be the more appropriate option. If you place greater value on thermal performance, acoustic comfort, long-term durability, and insulation made from a natural raw material, expanded cork may be the better fit.

HOW SHOULD THE WALL BE PREPARED BEFORE INSTALLING CORK BOARDS?

  1. Start by making sure the entire surface is thoroughly clean. Remove dust and dirt along with any remaining paint, adhesive, or wallpaper residue. Freshly finished walls may also be covered with construction dust, which should be removed because it can interfere with the adhesive’s ability to form a reliable bond.
  2. Next, inspect the wall for damage and uneven areas. Any cracks, holes, or more significant surface imperfections should be filled, repaired, and leveled before installation of the cork boards begins.

DO EXPANDED CORK BOARDS NEED TO ACCLIMATE BEFORE INSTALLATION?

Yes. For best results, keep the cork boards in the room where they will be installed for approximately 72 hours before beginning the installation. This gives the material time to gradually adjust to the temperature and humidity of its new environment. Because cork is a natural material, installing it immediately after delivery can result in minor dimensional movement later, such as slight expansion or contraction. Allowing sufficient time for acclimation helps minimize that possibility.

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED METHOD FOR INSTALLING EXPANDED CORK INSULATION BOARDS?

For adhering the boards, we recommend Wakol D-3540, a contact adhesive designed for cork applications. It is also the adhesive we use for our own cork installations and has consistently provided reliable results.

 

As a general estimate, plan on using about 100 g of adhesive per board. For reference:

  • 0.8 kg of adhesive is enough for approximately 8 boards,
  • 2.5 kg is enough for approximately 25 boards.

 

Proper surface preparation is essential for a strong bond that continues to perform over time. Before the boards are installed, make sure the wall is clean, dry, level, and ready to receive the adhesive.

CAN EXPANDED CORK BE PAINTED A DIFFERENT COLOR?

Yes. A paint formulated specifically for cork is generally the preferred option, although a high-quality interior wall paint may also be used.

Keep in mind that expanded cork naturally has a coarse, porous texture. Because of this surface structure, paint may not produce the same perfectly smooth and uniform appearance you would expect on a conventional wall, even when it is applied carefully.

Choosing insulation made from natural cork is one way to limit the amount of synthetic material present in your living environment.

Cork also offers meaningful environmental advantages because of the way the raw material is harvested. Cork oak bark can be removed without cutting down the tree, and the bark naturally regenerates afterward. As it grows back, cork oak trees absorb increased amounts of carbon dioxide. This natural renewal cycle contributes to the relatively low carbon footprint associated with cork production.

 

That gives cork a different environmental profile from insulation materials such as polystyrene and mineral wool, which depend on industrial manufacturing processes that can require substantial amounts of energy.
