WHAT MATERIALS MAKE BUREL WALL PANELS UNIQUE?

The Burel collection pairs two natural materials with deep roots in Portuguese craftsmanship: cork and burel.

Cork has been an important part of Portugal's material heritage for generations. While it is commonly associated with wine stoppers and bulletin boards, its possibilities extend much further. Today, cork can be found in decorative wall coverings, flooring, furniture, and a wide range of functional products for everyday use. Burel is a traditional Portuguese fabric made from 100% sheep's wool, originating in the mountainous Serra da Estrela region.

Bringing these two natural materials together in a single panel creates a distinctive wall surface where contrasting textures complement one another and add visual depth.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL DECORATIVE CORK WALL PANELS?

These panels are designed to be glued directly to the prepared wall surface. We particularly recommend Wakol D-3540 adhesive. Typical coverage requires approximately 150–250 g/m², making it easy to estimate how much adhesive your project will need. On average, one 0.8 kg package covers about 4 m², or roughly 22 panels. The larger 2.5 kg package provides enough adhesive for approximately 12.5 m², equivalent to about 68 panels.

HOW SHOULD THE WALL BE PREPARED BEFORE INSTALLATION?

Proper surface preparation is essential for a secure installation. Before applying the panels, confirm that the wall is clean, dry, level, and free of dust, grease, or other contaminants that could interfere with the adhesive bond.

Any uneven areas should be corrected before installation begins. For highly absorbent surfaces such as concrete, applying a primer is recommended. This helps prevent the substrate from drawing moisture out of the adhesive too quickly.

Another important step is to allow the cork to acclimate before installation, ideally for 72 hours. This gives the material time to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity. Skipping this process or reducing the acclimation period may increase the chance of dimensional movement after the panels have been installed.

ARE THE PANEL EDGES BEVELED?

No. The panels are manufactured with unbeveled edges.

In other words, decorative cork is a practical solution when you want to transform a wall while also making the room feel more comfortable. When insulation performance is the priority, choose a product specifically engineered for insulation instead.

WILL YOU BE ABLE TO SEE THE SEAMS BETWEEN PANELS?

The seams where individual panels meet may remain slightly visible after installation. Because cork is a natural material, it responds to changes in the temperature and humidity of its surroundings. This is why proper acclimation before installation is so important. Giving the panels enough time to adjust to the conditions in the room can help minimize later dimensional movement and make the seams less noticeable. Even with correct installation, however, minor visible joints are normal and should be considered part of cork's natural character.
