The Burel collection combines two distinctive materials rooted in Portuguese heritage – natural cork and burel.

Cork has played an important role in Portugal for generations. Today, this versatile natural material is used for much more than wine stoppers and classic cork boards. It can be found in decorative wall finishes, flooring, furniture, and many products used in everyday life. Burel is a traditional Portuguese fabric made entirely from sheep’s wool. Its origins can be traced to Serra da Estrela, a mountainous region known for its long-standing wool-making traditions.

HOW ARE BUREL DECORATIVE CORK PANELS CONSTRUCTED?

Every panel is constructed with three functional layers:

  1. A protective surface layer.
  2. A decorative layer that pairs natural cork veneer with burel pieces.
  3. A supporting base made from agglomerated cork.

HOW ARE DECORATIVE CORK WALL PANELS INSTALLED?

The panels are installed by adhering them directly to the wall. For this particular model, we recommend Wakol D-3540. Typical adhesive consumption is approximately 150–250 g/m², so the required amount can be estimated according to the total wall area you plan to cover. A 0.8 kg package covers roughly 4 m², or about 22 panels. A larger 2.5 kg package is suitable for approximately 12.5 m², which corresponds to around 68 panels.

HOW SHOULD THE WALL BE PREPARED BEFORE INSTALLATION?

Proper surface preparation is essential before the panels are installed. The wall should be clean, dry, even, and completely free of dust, grease, or other contaminants that could interfere with the adhesive bond.

Correct any uneven sections before beginning the installation. For highly absorbent substrates, such as concrete, applying a primer is recommended. A properly prepared surface helps prevent the wall from absorbing the adhesive too quickly.

It is equally important to acclimatize the cork before installation. Whenever possible, allow approximately 72 hours for this process. This gives the material time to adjust to the temperature and humidity conditions in the room where it will be installed.

ARE THE EDGES OF THE PANELS BEVELED?

No. These cork panels are manufactured without beveled edges.

WHAT MAKES DECORATIVE CORK A GOOD CHOICE FOR WALLS?

Different wall finishes can completely change the way a room looks and feels. Plastic is a synthetic material, while ceramic surfaces generally feel cooler and harder. Cork creates a noticeably different effect – it is natural, pleasantly warm to the touch, and can give the wall a softer, more inviting character.

WILL THE SEAMS BETWEEN CORK PANELS BE VISIBLE?

Some seams between individual panels may remain slightly visible after installation. Because cork is a natural material, it responds to fluctuations in indoor temperature and humidity. This is why proper acclimatization before installation is so important. Allowing the panels enough time to adjust to the room conditions can reduce subsequent dimensional changes and help make the seams less noticeable. Even when the panels are installed correctly, however, subtle visible joints are a normal characteristic of natural cork.
