Looking for a way to give a plain wall more personality? Instead of reaching for another can of paint or choosing a familiar wallpaper pattern, consider a finish that brings natural texture and distinctive character into your space. Burel Sunsets Cork Wall Panels pair natural cork with traditional Portuguese burel in inviting shades of orange. Artfully scattered color accents complement the organic variations of the cork, adding visual depth while allowing its natural texture to remain the focal point. The result is a sophisticated wall finish that brings together two materials closely connected to Portugal’s rich craft heritage.

Burel Collection FAQs: Everything You Need to Know

WHAT MATERIALS MAKE THE BUREL COLLECTION UNIQUE?

The Burel collection brings together two natural materials with deep roots in Portuguese craftsmanship: cork and burel.

Cork has been harvested and used in Portugal for generations. While many people associate it with wine stoppers or bulletin boards, its possibilities extend much further. Today, cork is used for decorative wall coverings, flooring, furniture, and a wide variety of everyday products. Burel is a traditional Portuguese fabric made from 100% sheep's wool and closely connected to the mountainous Serra da Estrela region.

Combining these two materials results in a distinctive decorative surface where the organic texture of cork meets the softer, textile character of burel.

WHAT MAKES BUREL SUNSETS STAND OUT?

Burel Sunsets features a warm natural cork surface accented by irregular pieces of orange burel. Rather than following a uniform or repeating layout, the colored details are distributed unevenly across the panels, creating a more spontaneous and varied appearance.

This design is a great fit for interiors where you want the authentic look of cork to remain prominent while introducing warmer color. The orange accents add an autumn-inspired touch without covering up the natural grain, texture, and visual variations that give cork its individual character.

HOW ARE BUREL CORK WALL PANELS CONSTRUCTED?

Each decorative panel is constructed from three separate layers:

  1. A protective surface finish.
  2. A decorative layer made with natural cork veneer and burel accents.
  3. A backing layer of agglomerated cork.

For exact panel dimensions, thicknesses, and other measurements, please refer to the product specifications provided further down the page.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL CORK WALL PANELS?

These cork wall panels are installed using adhesive. For this particular design, we recommend Wakol D-3540. Typical adhesive usage is approximately 150–250 g/m², making it easy to estimate how much you will need based on the size of your wall. A 0.8 kg container covers approximately 4 m², or about 22 panels. The larger 2.5 kg size is enough for roughly 12.5 m², which corresponds to approximately 68 panels.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE THE WALL BEFORE INSTALLATION?

Proper surface preparation is an important part of achieving a secure installation. Before applying the panels, make sure the wall is clean, dry, smooth, and free of dust, grease, and other residue. Any contamination left on the surface may interfere with the adhesive bond.

If the wall or substrate is uneven, level it before installation. Highly absorbent surfaces, including certain concrete walls, may also require a suitable primer. Priming helps keep the substrate from absorbing moisture from the adhesive too quickly.

The panels should also be given time to acclimate before installation. We recommend leaving the cork in the room where it will be installed for approximately 72 hours. This allows the natural material to adjust to the room's temperature and humidity. Proper acclimation helps minimize dimensional changes that could otherwise occur after the panels have been installed.

WHY CHOOSE CORK PANELS FOR YOUR WALLS?

The material covering your walls can have a major impact on the overall feel of a space. Plastic is a synthetic material, while ceramic surfaces often have a cooler, harder feel. Cork creates a noticeably different effect. It is a natural material that feels warm to the touch and gives walls a softer, more inviting appearance.

That quality can be especially appealing in bedrooms, living rooms, or home offices, where a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere is often preferred. Natural cork contributes its own distinctive texture and variation, while the Burel collection introduces an additional decorative element through color. In Burel Sunsets, these accents appear in rich, warm shades of orange.

DO DECORATIVE CORK PANELS PROVIDE INSULATION?

It is helpful to distinguish between added everyday comfort and dedicated thermal insulation. A decorative cork wall surface may feel warmer and more comfortable to the touch than many hard wall finishes. Its natural texture and appearance can also give the room a warmer, cozier visual character.

However, the Burel collection is primarily designed as a decorative wall finish. If improving thermal insulation is the main goal of your project, products such as ThermoKork Panels or Expanded Cork are better suited for that purpose.

In short, decorative cork is a practical choice when you want to enhance the appearance of a wall while also adding a bit of extra comfort. When insulation performance is the priority, it makes more sense to choose a cork product specifically engineered for thermal applications.

CAN YOU SEE THE SEAMS BETWEEN CORK PANELS?

Small seams between individual panels may remain visible after installation. Because cork is a natural material, it responds to fluctuations in temperature and humidity. This is one of the main reasons why proper acclimation before installation is so important. Giving the panels enough time to adjust to the conditions in the room can help reduce later dimensional movement and make the joints less noticeable. Even with careful preparation and correct installation, however, subtle seams may still be visible. This is a normal characteristic of natural cork rather than a product defect.

Looking for a wall finish that feels more natural than synthetic materials or hard, cool surfaces? A decorative product can look impressive in photos but create a completely different impression once you experience its texture and appearance in an actual room. Burel Sunsets Cork Wall Panels bring warmth and character to the space by combining genuine cork with vibrant orange accents inspired by the colors of a sunset.

#1 NATURAL CORK ENHANCED WITH COLORFUL WOOL ACCENTS

What makes these panels stand out is the way two distinctly different materials work together. Natural cork provides an organic foundation, while colored wool details introduce contrast and visual energy. The result is a surface that feels warm, dimensional, and naturally varied rather than perfectly uniform. Instead of a predictable repeating design, subtle irregularities give each section of the wall its own character.

The combination also draws on the long tradition of Portuguese materials and craftsmanship. Cork has deep roots in Portugal, as does burel, a traditional wool textile associated with the country's mountain regions. Burel Sunsets brings these two materials together in a contemporary decorative wall surface.

If you prefer walls with natural variation instead of a flat, standardized appearance, Burel Sunsets offers a distinctive alternative. The cork creates a balanced, organic backdrop, while irregular orange wool accents introduce warmth and movement. This contrast gives the panels an expressive look without overpowering the authentic beauty of the cork.

#2 NATURAL MATERIAL, EASY EVERYDAY CARE

Cork is a practical option for interiors where you want to reduce the use of synthetic finishes and introduce more natural materials. It also offers a useful everyday advantage: cork is less likely to attract dust than many conventional surfaces. That means you can create a decorative feature wall without adding an unnecessarily demanding maintenance routine.

Keeping the panels looking their best is refreshingly simple. Basic, regular cleaning is generally all that is needed. There is no need for complicated treatments or time-consuming care, making cork an approachable choice for everyday residential spaces.

#3 TURN AN ORDINARY WALL INTO A DESIGN FEATURE

Paint and wallpaper can change the color or pattern of a wall, but they typically do little to transform the character of the surface itself. Cork adds texture, depth, and natural visual variation, giving the wall a more tactile and dimensional presence within the room.

With this kind of surface, the wall itself can become a key part of the interior design without requiring layers of additional décor. If perfectly smooth and uniform finishes feel too conventional, Burel Sunsets Cork Wall Panels offer a more distinctive approach. Natural cork is paired with warm, sunset-inspired accents to create an inviting, sophisticated surface with a refined premium look.
