WHAT MAKES THE BUREL COLLECTION UNIQUE?

The Burel collection brings together two distinctive materials rooted in Portuguese heritage: natural cork and burel wool fabric.

Cork is one of Portugal’s most recognizable natural materials, but its applications extend far beyond wine stoppers and bulletin boards. Today, it is used for wall coverings, flooring, furniture, home accessories, and many other interior products. Burel is a traditional Portuguese textile woven from 100% sheep’s wool. Its origins are closely connected to Serra da Estrela, a mountainous region with a long tradition of wool craftsmanship.

WHAT DOES BUREL SIDERAL GREY LOOK LIKE ON A WALL?

Burel Sideral Grey pairs a warm natural cork base with irregularly placed gray burel accents. Generous areas of cork remain exposed, while darker pieces of wool appear throughout the surface in a free-flowing arrangement rather than a repetitive or symmetrical pattern.

The result works especially well in interiors where the organic appearance of cork should remain prominent while gaining a subtle, cooler contrast. Gray wool details add visual depth and definition without overpowering the natural variations that make each cork surface distinctive.

HOW ARE BUREL CORK WALL PANELS MADE?

Each panel is built with three primary layers:

  1. A protective surface finish.
  2. A decorative layer combining natural cork veneer with pieces of burel wool fabric.
  3. A supporting base made from agglomerated cork.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL CORK WALL PANELS?

The panels are installed by gluing them directly to the wall. For Burel Sideral Grey, we especially recommend Wakol D-3540 adhesive. Typical consumption is approximately 150–250 g/m², so the amount needed can be estimated based on the total wall area. A 0.8 kg container covers approximately 4 m², or about 22 panels. A 2.5 kg container provides enough adhesive for roughly 12.5 m², equivalent to approximately 68 panels.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TO PREPARE THE WALL?

Proper surface preparation is essential for a secure, long-lasting installation. Before applying any adhesive, make sure the wall is dry, clean, level, and completely free of dust, grease, and other contaminants that could reduce adhesion.

Repair or level any uneven areas before installation begins. Highly absorbent surfaces, including concrete, may benefit from an appropriate primer. Priming helps control absorption so the wall does not draw moisture out of the adhesive too quickly.

The cork panels should also be allowed to acclimate to the room before installation. Whenever possible, leave them in the installation environment for approximately 72 hours. This gives the natural material time to adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity. Installing the panels immediately may increase the likelihood of dimensional changes afterward.

DO THE PANELS HAVE BEVELED EDGES?

No. These panels are manufactured with straight edges and do not have a bevel.

WHY USE CORK PANELS AS A WALL COVERING?

Wall materials can have a major impact on how a room looks and feels. Plastic is a synthetic material, while ceramic surfaces generally feel harder and cooler. Natural cork creates a noticeably different experience. Its tactile texture and naturally warm feel can give an interior a softer, more inviting character.

However, the Burel collection is designed primarily as a decorative wall covering. If improving thermal insulation is the main objective of your project, products such as ThermoKork Panels or Expanded Cork are better suited for that application.

In other words, decorative cork is a practical choice when you want an attractive, natural-looking wall finish that also provides an added sense of comfort. When insulation performance is the priority, a cork product engineered specifically for insulating applications is the more appropriate solution.

WILL JOINTS BETWEEN THE CORK PANELS BE VISIBLE?

After installation, some joints between adjacent panels may remain slightly visible. Because cork is a natural material, it responds to changes in indoor temperature and humidity. Proper acclimation before installation is therefore an important part of achieving the best possible result. Giving the panels enough time to adjust to the room conditions can help reduce later dimensional movement and make the seams less noticeable. Minor visible joints can still occur and should be considered a normal characteristic of natural cork rather than a product defect.
