WHICH FLOORING OPTION IS BETTER: GLUED-DOWN CORK TILES OR FLOATING CORK PLANKS?

If you're trying to choose between glued cork tiles and floating cork flooring, it all comes down to what you value most. Do you want maximum durability and a custom-fitted look? Or is quick and easy installation more your style?

Glued cork tiles offer a sleek, seamless finish that stands the test of time. Once installed, they stay put – and when sealed with a protective coating, they look fantastic and resist wear and tear. The prep work takes a little more effort, but the end result is premium quality.

Floating cork floors, on the other hand, are perfect when you’re short on time or handling installation yourself. They’re easy to click together and don’t require adhesive – just remember, they may not match the longevity or aesthetic of professionally glued tiles.

HOW DO YOU INSTALL GLUED CORK TILES?

Installing a cork floor may sound intimidating, but it’s totally doable with the right game plan. Here's a simple breakdown:

Prepare the Subfloor:

  1. Inspect and level: Make sure the subfloor is even, solid, and dry. Any dips or bumps should be filled in and the surface must be thoroughly cleaned. For uneven surfaces, consider a self-leveling compound.
  2. Protect against moisture: Use a vapor barrier or primer if needed. Preventing moisture from seeping up is crucial for long-term performance.
  3. Acclimate the tiles: Let your cork tiles sit in the installation room for at least 72 hours to adjust to the room’s temperature and humidity. This helps avoid warping or shrinking later.

Tile Installation:

  1. Layout planning: Find the center of the room and snap chalk lines to map out the layout. Make sure edge tiles are no smaller than 2 inches wide for a balanced look.
  2. Apply adhesive: We recommend using Wakol D3540 contact cement. Roll it on evenly to both the floor and the tile backs, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Lay the tiles: Once the glue becomes clear, you’re good to go. Start from the center and work your way out, placing each tile precisely – there’s not much wiggle room once they’re down.
  4. Press firmly: Use a floor roller or a rubber mallet to press the tiles down evenly and ensure full adhesion.
  5. Let it cure: Allow 48 hours for the adhesive to fully set before walking on or furnishing the floor.

DO CORK TILES REALLY NEED TO ACCLIMATE?

Absolutely. Letting the cork tiles rest in the space for 72 hours ensures they adjust to the room’s climate. It’s the best way to prevent warping, expansion, or shrinkage after they’re installed.

DO YOU NEED UNDERLAYMENT FOR GLUED CORK FLOORS?

Nope! Glued cork tiles don’t require an underlayment. They’re installed directly onto the prepared subfloor with adhesive.

WHAT SURFACES CAN CORK BE INSTALLED ON?

Cork flooring works best over smooth, dry, and clean subfloors – whether it's concrete or wood. Just make sure everything is even and properly sealed before you start laying tiles.

SHOULD RAW CORK TILES BE SEALED?

Yes, sealing is highly recommended. We offer top-quality sealants that help protect your cork floor from spills, scratches, and wear, while giving it a sleek, long-lasting finish.

Raw cork, while naturally resilient, can be susceptible to moisture and dirt without a proper seal. Sealing the surface creates a protective barrier and enhances both durability and appearance.

A sealed cork floor is much easier to maintain and ideal for high-moisture areas like kitchens or bathrooms, where extra protection is essential.

IS CORK FLOORING GOOD FOR INSULATION?

Absolutely. Cork is naturally insulating – its cellular structure traps air, helping to maintain comfortable temperatures year-round. It keeps warmth in during colder months and feels cool underfoot during the summer.

Plus, this thermal performance can help reduce energy bills by minimizing heat loss.

IS CORK FLAMMABLE?

Cork has natural fire-resistant properties. While not 100% fireproof, it slows down flame spread and doesn’t release toxic fumes when exposed to high heat – unlike many synthetic flooring materials.

IS CORK WATERPROOF?

Cork is naturally resistant to moisture, but not completely waterproof. With a proper sealant, it can easily handle damp environments. Just avoid prolonged standing water to maintain the floor’s integrity.

CAN CORK HANDLE SPILLS?

Yes, sealed cork resists spills well. But like any flooring, it’s best to wipe them up quickly to avoid stains. Regular care and a good seal go a long way in keeping your cork floor looking its best.

IS CORK FLOORING COMPATIBLE WITH RADIANT HEATING?

Yes – as long as it's a hydronic (hot water) system. Cork floors retain heat well and stay warm underfoot, making them an excellent partner for in-floor heating.

Note: We don’t recommend using cork with electric radiant heating systems – they can get too hot and may damage the flooring over time.

DOES CORK DEGRADE OVER TIME?

Cork is naturally resistant to rot, mold, and mildew, thanks to its unique structure. When properly maintained and sealed, cork flooring can last for decades without losing performance or visual appeal.

HOW DO YOU CLEAN CORK FLOORS?

Use a soft cloth or damp mop – never soaking wet. For best results, use cleaning products designed for cork to gently remove dirt without harming the surface.

Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as they can strip the finish or dry out the cork over time.

HOW DOES CORK FLOORING COMPARE TO OTHER FLOORING OPTIONS IN TERMS OF COST?

At first glance, cork flooring might seem a bit more expensive than laminate or vinyl. But it’s an investment that pays off. Thanks to its exceptional lifespan, low maintenance needs, and built-in insulation, you’ll likely save more in the long run – especially on energy bills.

Plus, the natural look and feel of cork adds warmth and comfort that cheaper options just can’t match. It’s a smart choice for homeowners who want a floor that delivers performance and peace of mind.

WHAT SHAPE TILES SHOULD YOU CHOOSE – SQUARE OR RECTANGULAR?

Both options offer a modern, organic vibe – it just depends on your space and style preferences. Want a cleaner, minimalist layout? Or something dynamic and eye-catching?

Square cork tiles work great in smaller rooms. They keep the design balanced and can make compact spaces feel more open.

Rectangular tiles are ideal for long spaces or open floor plans – they help visually elongate or widen the room.

You can also get creative with rectangular layouts – try a herringbone or staggered pattern to add a custom touch to your space.

WHICH FINISH IS RIGHT FOR YOUR CORK FLOOR – MATTE, CERAMIC, OR UNFINISHED?

Matte finish: Offers a subtle, modern look that highlights the natural texture of cork. It’s easy to clean and perfect for high-traffic areas like living rooms or hallways.

Ceramic finish: Provides maximum protection against wear, scuffs, and spills. Great for families, pet owners, or anyone who wants a worry-free floor that still looks amazing.

Unfinished cork: Ideal for DIYers and design lovers. It gives you the freedom to apply natural oils or custom finishes for a one-of-a-kind look that matches your personal style.

A cork floor isn’t just about looks. It brings joint relief through its natural give, adds warmth underfoot during chilly winters, and delivers built-in sound insulation. Want to learn more?

#1 BUILT TO LAST

Cork flooring is known for its endurance and strength. When you install cork tiles, you’re investing in a floor that handles day-to-day wear with ease. Thanks to cork’s durability, your surface will stay beautiful and functional for decades.

Engineered to resist dents and scratches better than many common flooring types, cork performs exceptionally well in living rooms, kitchens, and high-traffic commercial spaces. It’s a smart blend of practicality and aesthetic appeal.

#2 WELLNESS AND COMFORT

Cork’s soft, flexible texture makes it a joint-friendly and naturally hygienic material. It cushions every step, helping to reduce strain on your legs, knees, and lower back. That’s especially beneficial for people who spend a lot of time on their feet.

Beyond that, cork helps regulate interior temperature and noise, offering natural thermal and acoustic insulation. It’s a floor that contributes to a calmer, more relaxing atmosphere at home.

#3 A GREEN CHOICE

Choosing cork means you’re opting for a sustainable, renewable material. It’s harvested by hand from the bark of cork oak trees without damaging them—a process that allows the tree to keep growing naturally.

By installing cork floors, you’re reducing your carbon footprint and supporting eco-conscious design. It’s a perfect match for modern lifestyles that value both sustainability and great design.

#4 NATURALLY COMFORTABLE

Cork tiles feel warm and soft underfoot—unlike cold tile or rigid laminate. Their insulating qualities mean less heat loss through the floor, and they retain comfort all year round.

Thanks to its resistance to moisture and warping, cork is a reliable option for areas prone to temperature and humidity changes. It keeps its shape and charm with minimal upkeep.

#5 LOW-MAINTENANCE & EASY TO CLEAN

Cork has anti-static properties, which help it repel dust and allergens—making it an excellent choice for allergy sufferers and pet owners. Cleanup is a breeze.

Regular vacuuming and an occasional damp mop are all it takes to keep your cork floor looking its best. It’s a smart solution that simplifies everyday living and keeps your home looking fresh.
