Installing new floors? While the surface might steal the spotlight, what’s beneath truly determines performance and longevity. Wondering why? The underlayment forms the foundation for your floor's stability, sound control, and durability. Skipping a proper one can lead to squeaky boards, shifting gaps, or worse — warped and broken panels. Got questions? We’ve got the answers!

WHAT’S THE RIGHT THICKNESS FOR CORK UNDERLAYMENT?

It depends on a few factors:

  • Condition of your subfloor: If it’s a bit uneven, a thicker layer helps smooth things out. But if it's already level, thinner underlayment will do the trick.
  • Traffic levels: For busy areas like offices or hallways, go thicker to withstand more footfall. In bedrooms or guest spaces, thinner padding is sufficient.
  • Insulation needs: Want to muffle sound and add warmth? Choose a thicker cork layer. For standard use, a thinner one works fine, too.
  • Clearance under doors: Keep in mind — extra thickness may affect how doors open or close. Better to factor that in before installation begins.

WHICH FLOORS ARE COMPATIBLE WITH CORK UNDERLAYMENT?

Cork underlay works great under floating floors — like click-together laminate or engineered wood. Since these types aren’t glued or nailed down, cork offers the perfect combination of support and give. It minimizes floor noise, evens out minor bumps, and enhances walking comfort.

IS CORK UNDERLAYMENT SUITABLE FOR HEATED FLOORS?

Cork naturally retains heat, which can delay the heating response time when paired with radiant floor systems. If fast, efficient heat transfer is a must, it may not be your best option.

WHY BOTHER USING CORK UNDERLAYMENT?

Because it extends your floor’s life. Uneven subfloors can cause structural stress, creaking, and cracking. Cork adds stability and makes installation smoother, reducing long-term damage risk.

It also shines when it comes to sound absorption — softening footsteps and dampening room-to-room noise. Plus, it helps insulate the floor against cold, making your home feel warmer and cozier underfoot.

IS CORK A SMART INVESTMENT?

Absolutely. While it may cost a bit more than foam options upfront, cork pays off over time. It’s long-lasting, durable, and shields your flooring — so you won’t be replacing things anytime soon.

HOW WELL DOES CORK HANDLE MOISTURE?

Very well. Cork is naturally moisture-resistant and doesn’t absorb water easily. That’s why it’s been used in wine bottles and seals for generations — no mold, no mildew, no mess.

DO I NEED TO GLUE THE CORK DOWN?

Nope. Cork underlayment is meant to be floated — just lay it down without glue. It adapts to floor expansion and temperature shifts, making it perfect for floating floors that need a stable yet flexible base.

HOW SHOULD I INSTALL CORK UNDERLAYMENT?

  1. Let the cork acclimate: Take it out of the packaging and leave it in the room for about 72 hours before installation.
  2. Ensure the subfloor is clean, dry, and level. Vacuum thoroughly, and consider using a vapor barrier — overlap the edges by at least 4 inches and bring it slightly up the wall.
  3. Roll out the cork in strips perpendicular to your floorboards. Align tightly together with gaps under 2 mm. Leave a 0.4 inch gap at the edges to allow natural floor movement.
  4. You can tape the seams for added stability. Smooth it out as you go — a wallpaper roller or similar tool works great to remove any air bubbles.

Picture this: You’ve just had your beautiful new floor installed, and a couple of months later — it starts creaking, and the planks feel like they’re sinking. Frustrating? Absolutely. Costly? Very likely. The smart way to prevent this? Lay down a cork underlayment from the start — and you’re set.

#1 ENGINEERED FOR ENDURANCE

You don’t want to think twice about your floor once it’s in place. A premium cork underlayment lets you install it once and forget it. No shifting boards. No squeaky surprises. No early repairs that hit your wallet.

Floors take a beating — dropped bags, kids racing around, rolling chairs. Over time, this adds up. Cork helps absorb the impact, cushions the pressure, and protects your flooring from warping or cracking.

Comfort matters too. If you enjoy walking barefoot and want a warmer, softer feel underfoot, cork delivers. It offers added thermal and sound insulation, turning your space into a cozy, quiet haven.

#2 A SAFER HOME BASE

Your floors are part of everyday life — where babies crawl, toddlers stumble, and kids run wild. Cork underlayment adds an extra layer of protection, making your home safer and more forgiving.

It’s also ideal for allergy-conscious households. Cork doesn’t trap dust, it’s naturally resistant to mold and mites, and it’s free of toxic emissions. Clean, breathable air starts from the ground up.

#3 A CUT ABOVE THE AVERAGE

Most underlayment options might seem interchangeable — but performance tells a different story. Low-quality materials fall short fast, leading to loose boards, uneven surfaces, and noisy footsteps.

With cork, you upgrade across the board: superior sound control, a warmer surface, and a stronger foundation for your flooring — all in one solution.

#4 VALUE YOU CAN FEEL

When it comes time to sell your house, every detail plays a role. Choosing cork underlayment shows that you’ve invested in quality — not just cut corners for a quick fix.

Cork is a natural and renewable material that’s biodegradable and safe for the environment. If you’re eco-conscious, this is a solution that aligns with your values — without sacrificing function or style.

And let’s be honest — cork has an upscale appeal. It speaks to thoughtful design and lasting quality. Even if selling isn’t on your radar now, cork could be the upgrade that sets your home apart down the line.
